The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened in cinemas yesterday - and many Spidey fans came out confused after a mid-credits scene featured a clip from rival superhero flick X-Men: Days of Future Past.
A scene featuring Jennifer Lawrence as X-Men mutant Mystique played during the closing credits of the Spider-Man sequel, leading some fans to wonder whether Peter Parker and Professor Xavier were looking to team up.
Spider-Man and the X-Men - both from the Marvel stable - have frequently crossed paths in their comic book forms.
But the answer is a categorical no.
While the characters all originate from Marvel comics, their film rights belong to separate studios (20th Century Fox and Sony, respectively).
The reason for the unusual inclusion is somewhat complicated. The Amazing Spider-Man’s director, Marc Webb, was previously under contract at Fox. As part of his agreement releasing him from that contract, Sony agreed to plug some of Fox’s material for free.
The mid-credits sequence was not featured in the press screening we attended last week.
Movies in the Avengers series, from Disney-owned Marvel studios, have regularly teased future films in post-credits sequences.
But the fierce rivalry between studios makes any cross-studio character team-ups seem unlikely.
