Robert Pattinson's elephantine co-star in the hit film Water for Elephants may not have had the same VIP treatment as her co-stars. Tai, the elephant that appears alongside R-Patz and Reese Witherspoon, was mistreated by her trainers, according to secret footage released by Animal Defenders International (ADI).
In the video, Tai is seen being given electric shocks with hand-held stun guns and being beaten with bull hooks.
The charity's CEO Jan Creamer said that the video that the public had been 'duped'. "I believe that Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson will be horrified to learn what Tai went through."
However, the Californian performing animal firm, Have Trunk Will Travel, which owns 42-year-old Tai, said the video was six-years old and that no animal abuse had occurred during the filming of Water for Elephants.
The film stars Pattinson as Jacob Jankowski, a veterinary student who quits his studies toi join a circus after the death of his parents. Here he falls for the beautiful but married Marlena, star of the show and wife of circus owner August (Christopher Waltz).
Water for Elephants is currently placed at number 4 in the international box office, taking $11.1 million (£6.8 million) in 45 markets so far.
