The American actress is best known for playing the role of shy indie kid Bella Swan in the hit vampire series Twilight.
Despite her young age, she is a veteran of movies ranging from the thriller Panic Room to the supernatural thriller The Messengers.
The daughter of a TV producer and a script supervisor, Swan was home-schooled and landed her first role with a non-speaking part in The Thirteenth Year in 1999.
She went on to have a brief role as “the ring toss girl” in Viva Rock Vegas and played Patricia Clarkson’s troubled teenager daughter in the drama The Safety of Objects.
In 2002, she landed her first major role, playing Jodie Foster’s sullen, diabetic daughter in the David Fincher thriller Panic Room.
She went on to star in the thriller Cold Creek Manor, playing the dauhter of Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone and then starred in the children’s action comedy Catch That Kid.
In 2004, at the age of thirteen, she received critical acclaim for the role of college student freshman who is raped in the TV film Speak.
The following year she starred in the fantasy-adventure Zathura as the irresponsible sister of two boys who turn their house into a spacecraft.
Roles followed in the Griffin Dunne drama Fierce People with Diane Lane the Pang Brothers’ supernatural thriller The Messengers with Dylan McDermott.
In 2007, Stewart appeared as teenager Lucy Hardwicke in the romantic drama The Land of Women and won more admirers for her performance as a young singer in Sean Penn’s impressive drama Into The Wild.
She had a cameo in the unimpressive action thriller Jumper and was then cast by director Catherine Hardwicke (while she was on the set of Adventureland) as Bella Swann in the vampire drama Twilight.
She won an MTV Award for best female performance and reprised the role opposite Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in the sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
In 2009, she played gurrl rocker Joan Jett in the critically acclaimed rock biopic The Runaways and portrayed a youngster who has turned to stripping to make a buck in Welcome To The Rileys opposite James Gandolfino.
Stewart went on to complete the Twilight series with the two-parter Breaking Dawn and can next be seen in Walter Salles drama On The Road, an adaptation of the Jack Kerouac novel co-starring Sam Riley and Kirsten Dunst.
Upcoming roles include the titular lead in Snow White and the Huntsman, a dark take on the traditional tale with Chris Hemsworth, set for release in June, 2012.
