Spielberg wants to tell a new West Side Story

The Jets and the Sharks - or just one big shark?

Steven Spielberg is eyeing a remake of award-winning musical West Side Story, according to reports.

The legendary director has "registered interest" in a new version of the classic Broadway musical, written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

Loosely based on Romeo & Juliet, the most famous incarnation of the play was the 1961 film version directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, which swept the board at the Oscars with ten gongs.

Nothing has been set in stone, but 20th Century Fox are thought to be very enthusiastic about the prospect of a West Side Spielberg.

It'd be an interesting career move for the 67-year-old filmmaker, who until recently had been putting his efforts into an adaptation of the science-fiction novel Robopocalypse.

In a long and varied career, Spielberg has never directed a musical before - perhaps it's one last genre he needs to tick off his list before retirement?
