Entirely by accident you understand.
People on the internet. They’re an excitable bunch. (And we include ourselves here).
Hungry for any tidbit of casting news, they got themselves all a-flutter earlier today when Simon Pegg tweeted a picture of himself at the Marvel offices standing next to a picture of Ant-Man…and pointing.
Was he trying to tell us something? Was he? HE WAS!
Or was he?
With 3.4m twitter followers, the obvious conclusion was drawn by a vocal minority, though they neglected to consider he also tweeted pictures of himself next to Hulk, and one holding Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir.
He later tweeted:
‘FFS the Internet, all I did was point at the central character in my dear friend's next movie, because I'm excited for him.’ [While cheekily adding the hashtag] #iamantman
He then added:
‘Oh wait, I f****** up that hashtag. It was supposed to be #iamnotantman’
Before a final:
I am however going to play Antnan, a film about the adventures of a tiny grandmother. #iamantnan
All good fun. Except as you will note, at no point did he truly deny it.
Edgar Wright will be directing Ant-Man for Marvel from a script he co-wrote with Joe Cornish about scientist Henry Pym, who invents a chemical that allows him to vary his size. Though the film is not a spoof, it is apparently going to have a lighter tone than other recent Marvel offerings.
Hmmm. Let’s think. A lightly comic superhero movie featuring a smart, genial scientist…
Can anyone think of an actor who might be perfect for that role?
Anyone? Anyone at all?
Ant-Man will be released in 2015.
