In reality, the CRASH (Community Resource Against Street Hoodlums) unit of the LAPD was set up to deal with the burgeoning street crime issues LA was dealing with in the late 90s. However, the unit was so corrupt, that once the bad cops were found out, they were found guilty of evidence planting, murder, rape, beatings, framing of suspects, stealing, narcotics, bank robbery (!) and perjury.
These guys had ties to the very leaders of the gangs they were supposed to break up (including the infamous Marion 'Suge' Knight of Death Row Records), and were even found to have been guilty of the drive-by shooting of Notorious B.I.G.
Rampart tells their story through Dave Brown (Harrelson), one of the cops involved who simply wants to support his family and survive the dark side of the LAPD.
Rampart is in cinemas 24 February.
