Pinkie Brown: "What you want me to say is, 'I love you'. Well I don't. I hate you, you little slut..."
Forget the anaemic 2011 remake. This was the real deal...an icily callous adaptation of Graham Greene's novel revelling in 1930s Britain's seedy underbelly.
Richard Attenborough made the skin crawl as petty gangster Pinkie Brown, a vindictive thug who rashly slashes a rival to death and unwisely uses waitress Rose (Carol Marsh) to provide his alibi.
Director John Boulting whipped up a threatening atmosphere of dread, particularly after Pinkie convinces Rose to tie the knot...and then attempts to drive her to suicide.
