Being Joaquin Phoenix.
A second trailer for Her, the upcoming romantic drama from director Spike Jonze, has just been released.
The new film from the director of left-field critical darlings like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation see Joaquin Phoenix play a socially inadequate writer who falls in love with an artificially intelligent computer, voiced by Scarlett Johannson.
This latest trailer features new music from Arcade Fire and glimpses of supporting roles from Amy Adams and Rooney Mara.
Her has received hugely positive notices from American critics and is generating considerable awards buzz - though not necessarily for Johansson.
The HFPA have confirmed that a voice-only performance is not eligible for a Golden Globe. Other awards shows, including the Oscars, are expected to confirm either way soon.
The synopsis for the film reads thus:
"Set in the Los Angeles of the slight future, “Her” follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.
From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world."
Her is released in the UK on January 24th, 2014.
