The Master, in case you haven't yet heard the hype, is the new film from director Paul Thomas Anderson, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, which will be screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival and also appear at the Toronto Film Festival not long afterwards.
The film is an original story written by Anderson in which Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls. Joaquin Phoenix is one of said "lost souls", co-starring alongside Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky, Rami Malek and Joshua Close.
In this clip, we see a a desperate Joaquin Phoenix running down to an abandoned pier claiming, "I lost my ship", before a two naval officers tell him to "go down to Pier 39". It's unsettling and hauntingly beautiful.
