THE WAIT: 9 years
WHAT TOOK SO LONG? Original director Chuck Russell tried to tempt Jim Carrey back for the sequel, even going to the lengths of reviving Amy Yasbeck's character (she died in the original). However, the funnyman wasn't biting.
Director Lawrence Guterman eventually helmed the project, drafting in Jamie Kennedy as Tim Avery, an aspiring cartoonist from Fringe City who's just had his first child born with the powers of the Mask. The film bombed.
Intriguingly, it was one of four sequels to Carrey films - the others were Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, Evan Almighty and Ace Ventura Jr: Pet Detective - where the great man did not appear. We're not counting Batman & Robin...and who is?
