TODAY'S TOP MOVIE NEWS: WEDNESDAY AUGUST 17
Latest Avengers spoilers reveal possible villains, Matthew McConaughey to play male stripper and Christina Hendricks still up for Wonder Woman.
LATEST AVENGERS SPOILERS REVEAL POSSIBLE VILLAINS
After yesterday’s bombastic on-set videos which offered us a glimpse of the pyrotechnics currently being employed on the Cleveland set of The Avengers, today's on-set spoilers are, well, a little more spoilery.
As well as some photos which show Chris Evans in action in full Captain America garb, some videos have surfaced showing The First Avenger facing off against a duo of bad guys outfitted with motion capture suits. So what will these suits become in postproduction then? Well, the spoilers also reveal that the men are holding what looks distinctly like some kind of alien weaponry, so our money’s on long-time Avengers adversaries the Krees and Skrulls talking on the mantle of villains for Marvel’s upcoming superhero blockbuster.
The Skrulls, in case you didn’t know, are a shape-shifting alien race who have created a vast interstellar empire, whilst the Skree are their sworn enemy, and another highly advanced alien empire who go toe-to-toe with the Skrull throughout The Avenger’s primary coloured history. Nothing’s confirmed yet of course and it’s not clear whether or not the alien adversaries will be fighting each other on the streets of New York, or join forces with naughty Norse god Loki to take on Earth’s Mightiest heroes.
But if the current torrent of spoilers are anything to go by we doubt it will be long before all is revealed from the set of The Avengers and you can find out for certain when the film lands in cinemas in April 2012.
MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY TO PLAY MALE STRIPPER
Given that he spends an average of 36.6% of his on screen time with his shirt off, the idea of Matthew McConaughey playing a male stripper in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming movie Magic Mike is perhaps not much of a surprise.
The perpetually shirtless star of films like The Lincoln Lawyer and Sahara is poised to join Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer in the semi-biographical tale about Tatum’s days as a professional clothes remover in Florida before he made it big in the movies.
Tatum will play the title character, a stage bound wriggler who mentors Alex Pettyfer in the way of luring women to place dollar bills in your undies both on and off stage. As for McConaughey, he’s set to play a former exotic dancer who now owns the titillating monikered male strip joint “Xquisite” where the bare chested boys will work.
There’s no word yet on when production on Magic Mike gets underway but never fear movie fans, we’ll keep you bang up to date with all the latest developments as and when they happen.
WONDER WOMAN MOVIE WITH CHRISTINA HENDRICKS STILL POSSIBLE CLAIMS DIRECTOR
Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has made no secret of his desire to tackle a silver screen adaptation of DC Comics’ Amazonian princess, nor his wish to cast Mad Men star Christina Hendricks in the lead role. But a plan that many thought was pie in the sky could become a reality if the director’s latest comments are to be believed.
Speaking during promotional duties for his upcoming flick, which Hendricks also stars in, Refn claimed that that studio executives have promised him he can shoot a Wonder Woman film provided his remake of Logan's Run performs well at the box office.
He said: "I would love to make Wonder Woman. "And I also think that Christina Hendricks would be the perfect Wonder Woman, but Warner Bros haven't called yet." He continued. "But I'm getting closer with Logan's Run. I think someone said to me in a meeting that if I get Logan's Run right, then I'll get Wonder Woman."
But comic fans may have a wait on their hands as Refn’s adaptation of the cult 1976 sci-fi flick isn’t slated until 2014.
