Johnny Depp rumoured to play Doctor Strange

14 January 2014

A rumour a day keeps the Doctor at bay.

It’s very much just whispers and hearsay at this point, but intriguing if it were true: a “well-connected source” at Marvel Studios has claimed that Johnny Depp is in talks to play the classic superhero Dr. Strange.

This comes from the reputable volume that is the, er, Latino Review, which while not exactly the New York Times, has gained several accurate Marvel scoops in the past, including breaking the news that Bradely Cooper would voice Rocket Raccoon in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.

Doctor Strange - a slightly magician, sorcerer and neurosurgeon, who could reasonably be described as “Burton-esque” - would be an inspired piece of casting for the leftfield-loving Depp. The character was beloved of hippies and counterculturalists in the 1960s for its psychedelic artwork and outlandish supernatural storylines.

Depp already has an established relationship with Disney, which owns Marvel. He has starred in one of their biggest franchises as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Nothing is even remotely confirmed, so take everything with some fairly hefty pinches of salt, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.
