It’s a rumour that seems to be gathering traction.
The Bourne Trilogy was one of the finest in recent Hollywood history. The ending to Ultimatum was a perfect conclusion to a character arc and a series that reinvented action cinema.
Critical acclaim and commercial success meant that Universal Studios was unlikely to leave things there. The series became a franchise with 2012’s The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner, which met with mixed reviews and modest success. A Legacy sequel is already planned but surely Jason Bourne as a character will be left in peace? Well, possibly not.
Matt Damon has always dampened any expectation of a return to Bourne by stating he would only ever consider it if Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass was at the helm and the story was strong enough.
Surprising reports over the weekend suggest that Universal is negotiating separately with Damon and Greengrass about a return to Bourne. It’s obviously an intriguing notion but we’re sceptical.
If Damon and Greengrass were to return for a Bourne film, it would be for financial rather than creative reasons and neither tends to pick their projects on that basis. However, if the cheque is large enough…
The notion of an Aaron Cross / Jason Bourne crossover may appeal to some but not to us and we won’t hold our breath. Though we’ll watch developments with interest.
