Like the Avengers, but with a raccoon.
Here’s our very first glimpse of Marvel’s next world-saving superhero ensemble: the Guardians of the Galaxy.
This ragtag bunch of sci-fi heroes will form the tenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will detail a futuristic team fighting crime in space. It is being directed by James Gunn.
Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has been keeping this particular set of cards very close to his chest, with only a few lucky souls at Comic-Con seeing any footage thus far.
This still is the first official image from the production.
The featured cast (L-R) are: Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord, Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket Raccoon, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, and Vin Diesel as Groot.
Filming has been taking place in London’s Shepperton Studios as well as location shooting at the Millennium Bridge.
Here’s the first official synopsis:
"An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe.
To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance."
A world of talking racoons and bizarre space aliens is undoubtedly something of a gamble for the Disney-owned comic book studio, but Feige is confident this will won’t be the film that brings down Marvel’s unbroken run of hits.
We’ll soon see when Guardians of the Galaxy is released on 1st August 2014.
