Jim Gordon is the new Columbo.
A new TV drama based around the rise of Commissioner James Gordon from the Batman world has been picked up by Fox.
The story will centre on Jim Gordon's early career and rise to prominence within the Gotham Police Department. Which sounds to us like it's based on Gotham Central, the popular long-running comic series focussing on what it’s like to be a cop in a city with a particularly effective vigilante. And colourful villains, of course.
However, it is very unlikely Batman himself will appear within the show.
Fox outbid Warner Bros. to make the show, and have committed to a full season, rather than just a pilot.
It'll be the first time anyone from the Batman realm has appeared in a TV show since the classic 60s capers. There was a rumour that Bruce Wayne would turn up in Smallville, but the episode never materialised.
The announcement follows the launch of Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which also focuses on the non-costumed, detective heroes of that particular superhero world, without any intention of introducing the heroes that comprise the Avengers.
