Originality has also fallen.
Israeli producer Avi Lerner has announced there will be a sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, the silver medal winner in 2013’s White-House-under-attack-movie race.
Though overshadowed in box office take by White House Down, it still took a respectable $160m in international ticket receipts (on a $70m budget) and so a sequel in now in motion.
The new film, which will feature returning stars Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman, is inventively called London Has Fallen and will be set in the UK capital, when terrorists attack the funeral of a British Prime Minister.
Avi Lerner has already made headlines this month. Last week he raised eyebrows at the prospect of a female Expendables, tentatively called the ExpendaBelles, which he hoped would star Meryl Streep and Cameron Diaz.
Until producing Sly Stallone’s conveyer belt of muscle The Expendables in 2011, Lerner was primarily known for cheap-and-cheerful Bulgarian B-movies, including such contemporary masterpieces as Cyborg Cop, Bridge of Dragons, and Shark Attack 3: Megalodon.
Now, thankfully, the producing prodigy is bringing his Poundstretcher-on-steroids filmmaking philosophy to a wider audience.
Production on London Has Fallen - and yes, they really are calling it that - is scheduled to begin in May 2014.
