Because he's the Jobs we deserve, but not the Jobs we need.
David Fincher has reportedly given an ultimatum to studio Sony: he will only direct the long-mooted biopic of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs if Christian Bale is cast in the lead.
According to sources at The Wrap, Fincher is still in early talks to rejoin his Social Network colleague Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin has already turned in a script, based on Walter Isaacson's authorised biography of the late billionaire.
Bale has yet to be approached, but it is an intriguing prospect for the British actor.
Sorkin's script covers three key product launches in Jobs' life: the unveiling of the Mac computer, the iMac, and the iPhone.
Jobs died in 2011 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer; one film (Jobs) has already been made about the man, with Ashton Kutcher in the titular role. It received mixed reviews.
Fincher is currently completing Gone Girl, due out later this year; his Jobs biopic could start early in 2015.
