Boy, that escalated quickly.
It’s now less than two months until the release of the much-anticipated Anchorman sequel and the exalted return of hirsute 70s newsman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell).
Although that film has not yet hit cinemas, director Adam McKay has revealed he's already considering a second, alternate cut of the film - perhaps even to be released at the same time as the original version.
This is not the first time an alternate version of a film has sprung from the comedy partnership of McKay and Ferrell, whose heavily improvisational atmosphere on set throws up numerous takes to choose from.
Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie was a straight-to-DVD film made from unused takes and subplots of the original Anchorman movie. This would be the first time that an alternate cut has enjoyed a theatrical release, however.
Speaking to Empire, McKay revealed:
“We did so much improv on this one that we can literally replace every single joke in the movie and put in alt scenes and alt improv runs. I think the editor’s working on it right now, with 250 new jokes. I think it would be really funny to put it in theatres for midnight showings. I know that I personally, if I loved a movie and someone told me that, like if Airplane! had been released with all-new jokes, I’d be like, ‘you’ve got to be f***ing kidding me!’ I’d see it in a second.”
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is out in cinemas on December 20th, 2013.
