David St. Hubbins: "It's such a fine line between stupid...and clever."
Director Rob Reiner's pin sharp mockumentary nailed the wacky behaviour and musical pretensions of hard rock and progressive bands of the 70s and 80s. Zep, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen...all got a sound satirical kicking.
Employing mock Dick Van Dyke English accents, the band - formed by childhood friends David St Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) - lurch from one embarrassing episode to another with St Hubbins' yoga devotee girlfriend a Yoko Ono-style spectre at the side of the stage.
Highlights included the amp that "goes up to 11" and the miniature Stonehenge set...that was supposed to be a lot bigger. Think Yes's 'Relayer' tour. Bizarrely, the genuine 2009 band documentary Anvil followed a similar plotline...but for real.
